Thickener Updates! Two More Thickeners and Three Formulations.

The advantage of a thick formulation in cleaners was posted earlier.  This is also true for disinfectant solutions.  Cleaning and disinfecting performance will improve due to increased contact time specially to vertical and inclined surfaces.  Two more thickeners that can thickened your hypochlorite solutions are Crodasinic HT and BURCO THIX CB-1000.

Crodasinic HT can be used as thickener for sodium hypochlorite based cleaning and disinfecting household product.

Examples of thickened sodium hypochlorite bleach products:
  • Lavatory bowl cleaners
  • Drain and wastepipe cleaners/unblockers
  • Household cleaning products for cleaning and disinfecting various hard surfaces such as
  • baths, sinks and work surfaces
  • Laundry products which can be diluted for cold bleaching and stain removal
Thickened Sodium Hypochlorite Bleach Formulation using Crodasinic HT

% weight
% weight
Sodium Hypochlorite 5% available chlorine

Sodium Hypochlorite 7.5% available chlorine

Crodasinic HT
Sodium hydroxide solution (50%)

Benefits of Crodasinic HT
  • Single product required to effectively thicken sodium hypochlorite bleach solutions
  • Pseudoplastic viscosity profile maintained during storage at ambient temperatures
  • Minimal effect on available chlorine levels compared to controls during storage
  • Easily incorporated into formulations containing sodium hypochlorite bleach
  • Easy to handle liquid
  • Improved cleaning performance
  • Enhanced foaming characteristics
  • Increased surface wetting
  • Fragrance solubilisation
  • Readily biodegradable as defined in Directive 93/21/EEC test OECD301E
  • Components listed on the Japanese (MITI), US (TSCA) & European (EINECS) chemical inventories

BURCO THIX CB-1000 is a thickener/surfactant for hypochlorite Solutions

Benefits and Features
  • Provides thickening and detergency to formulations containing sodium hypochlorite bleach
  • Exhibits pseudoplastic (shear-thinning, non-newtonian) rheology to produce easily sprayed products that cling to vertical surfaces for added contact time
  • Useful for making transparent formulations
  • Outstanding chlorine and viscosity stability
  • The only surfactant required in most bleach-based cleaning formulations
  • Provides foaming, detergency and wetting

Add the desired amount of sodium hypochlorite solution. Mix until completely uniform and clear (30 – 60 minutes). Increase speed of agitation as product thickens. No addition of other surfactants is required or desired.

Typical Applications
  • Bathroom hard surface cleaners (toilet, tub & tile cleaners, mildew removers)
  • Laundry pre-spotters
