Butyl cleaners are synonymous to all-purpose cleaners. All-purpose cleaners are typically moderately alkaline products (pH 9 -11) with added solvent and are generally recommended for any water-washable surface. All-purpose cleaners that contain diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (“butyl cellosolve”) or any member of the glycol ether family are often referred to as “butyl cleaners”. This water miscible solvent glycol ether are added to all-purpose cleaners because of its superior oily soil removal property. However, because of the higher pH and the solvent content, this type of cleaner should not be used on a routine basis on floors containing a floor finish. Better use neutral cleaners or light duty cleaners with pH 7 to 9.5 or non-butyl cleaners.
